Re: (erielack) D&H Interchange

Tim -

The D&H owned two yards at Binghamton - Liberty Street Yard which was almost directly tied to the EL, and Bevier Street, which was farther north. Up to the Dereco era of joint operations, EL delivered to the D&H at Liberty Street, and I think EL also picked up from the D&H at the same location. After about 1969, EL leased Liberty Street Yard from the D&H and closed East Binghamton, the former DL&W yard. If I remember correctly, the interchange still normally occurred at Liberty Street Yard.

Jefferson Jct (JN) was used primarily for dimension loads to and from the D&H that would not clear through the D&H Belden Tunnel between Nineveh Jct and Binghamton. That was an awkward move that required the D&H to either extend a local from Oneonta (SU-2) beyond Windsor to reach JN, or stop a road train at the foot of a grade. EL had to send a road train or a local down the connection to the D&H to pick up or deliver the load. That happened once or twice per week at the most.

After Conrail, in 1976, the D&H ran some through trains over the Lanesboro connection until the D&H acquired the DL&W between Scranton and Binghamton. Then, when the D&H rebuilt Belden Tunnel, all D&H trains to the west from Binghamton had to detour via JN for several months.

List, would anybody know how the EL and D&H interchanged in the 60s? Was any done in Binghamton near the station or at the east end? How much was done at Lanesboro?
