Re:(erielack) Interline Switching
List,
Thanks again for all who contributed to the discussion about waybills and interline switching.
Is there a list of short lines that had this sort of arrangement with the EL? I'm assuming that a "really short" line that was captive to the EL, such as the Bath & Hammondsport, would have such an arrangement.

. . .If your short line was predominantly inbound/prepaid (a situation probably
typical of most EL short lines), you did the work first and waited to be paid
by connecting railroads. Same for outbound/collect. Your money didn't depend

. . .Which they often didn't or, if they did to meet the statutory requirements
for the payment of freight bills, they still audited and filed claims for
perceived overcharges. The payor of the freight charges audited each freight
bill against his own knowledge of his commodity, origins, destinations, and the
tariff rates attaching thereto, which he (or his clerks) knew as well as or

Whole careers and lifetimes of armies of workers stood on these endeavors. And
the question of rates appearing on the bill of lading is a whole 'nother story .
