RE: (erielack) Mahoning Division Yards

Info from some EL documents I have:

For the years 1972-74 (the data I have) Republic Steel generated more
carloads for the EL then any other customer.
1972 - 50,692
1973 - 60,626
1974 - 56,636 (of those 23,385 were loads of ore)

These are corporate numbers so these include Republic Mills in Youngstown,
Niles, Warren.

EL Youngstown Agency guide from 7/12/62:

Republic Steel Corp. in Youngstown -

Bessemer Works - joint switching arrangement, PRR performs switching
Haselton Furnace - joint switching arrangement, B&O performs switching
Open Hearth and Tube Mill - joint switching arrangement, B&O performs
switching
By Products - LE&E - Reciprocal switching

Republic Steel Corp. in Niles -

Sheet and Tinplate Mill - joint switching arrangement, EL performs switching
Niles Steel Products Division - EL & PRR open, EL performs switching
Container Division - EL performs switching
Truscon Steel Roof and Deck plant - joint switching arrangement, EL performs
switching
Truscon Steel Joist and Deck plant - EL & PRR open, EL performs switching

Republic Steel Corp. in Warren -

Mill and Trumbull Furnaces - joint switching arrangement, served by EL, PRR
and B&O. B&O performs switching.

The joint switching arrangement in the Warren/Niles/Youngstown/Sharon area
worked as such: All the steel plants were accessible and served by all the
major trunk lines (EL, PLE, PRR, NYC, BO). In order to avoid duplicate
switching, congestion and excessive costs, the railroads arranged that power
and crews would be provided by one of the lines to perform all the switching
at a particular plant with the cost of wages, supplies and engine rental
pro-rated among the carries based on how many cars handled.

The Tin Mill in Niles closed in 1970 with the loss of 2500 carloads to the
EL. The container plant closed in 1972 with the loss of 414 carloads to the
EL.

From a P&LE document, dated 1977, the P&LE handled 10,218 inbound to
Republic in Youngstown and 561 outbound. By contrast, in 1982, Conrail
handled 4,723 outbound from Republic Warren/Youngstown and 8,970 inbound.
10 years earlier EL alone was handling between 50-60,000 cars for Republic.
A nice figure to show the decline of the mills in Youngstown. I believe
Republic Hasleton Furnaces idled around 1984-85. Steve Timko can likely
clarify that.

Hope this helps a little bit,
Steve (of the non-Timko variety)

To what extent did the Erie and the EL service Republic Steel in Youngstown?
I believe that the P&LE was a major transporter for Republic there.
