This is only true with CTC, where the DS can set signal indications with
flashing indications or whatever to direct train movements. In TT/TO or DTC
territory, rights are conferred by the DS and communicated by radio or
written orders (track warrants in the case of DTC); the signals provide an
extra layer of protection. For example, on NS's S-line down here (single
track TT/TO), an order via radio might sound (in part) like this:
"No. 162, engine ****, run extra Bridgeport to Oyama; meet No. 165, engine
**** at Connelly Springs."
The train will stop and wait in the clear at the east end of CS even though
he's looking at high green.
What type of control was in effect on the single track sections of ex-DL&W
in NJ, ie: the Cutoff and Denville-Great Notch?
