Re: (erielack) Portage Bridge near Hornell (2)

Speed restrictions at this location were dictated by engineering issues with
the bridge itself, the curves on either side, track conditions and type of
equipment operating over it. The following restrictions were listed in the
10-25-64 ETT:

Portage, curves east of: 40
over viaduct: 30; snow-fighting equipment and 250-ton wrecking crane: 20
1st curve west of: 30
2nd curve west of: 40
3rd curve west of: 40

It is possible that lower speed limits were in effect in the final years of
EL due to track/bridge conditions.

Pedestrians considerations in speed restrictions are limited to
street-running, along with accomodation for vehicular traffic.

The RR would never put a speed restriction on a bridge of 10 MPH because
people are occasionally around.

Lots of bridges and lots of sections of right of way have people around,
but
that never brings with it speed restrictions, nor should it.
