Re: (erielack) Re: EL Mail List Digest V3 #2837

Well, I guess somebody has to asnwer this question.

The Lackawanna used helper engines on virtually all trains going east and
west out of Scranton. Passenger train helpers were put on at the depot when
engines were changed. Coal trains originated at Hampton yard or Kingston
and the helpers were put on along with road power. Coal trains often had a
helper on the front and three pushers on the rear. These would be 2100
sereis 2-8-2s and 2200 series 4-8-2s. 1400 class 4-8-2s were pretty much
gone by the 1940s. All pushers returned to Scranton or Kingston after being
cut off at Gouldsboro or Clarks Summit.

Helpers for passenger trains were usually 4-8-4s in the 1650 and higher
numbers. There were also a number of 2100 2-8-2s used for helpers on
passenger trains and as road power for extras, etc. To be a helper on
passenger trains the locos ahd to be equipped with train signals and usually
had steam heating lines.

I only saw 4-6-4s in service west of Scranton. Also, there was usually only
one 4-6-2 on trains in Scranton that I can recall and that was used on the
Bloomsburg Branch passenger train.
