Re: (erielack) Re: CNJ Interchange

In later years, the LV National Docks Branch connected with
the PC River Line at CP-Nave in Jersey City, forming a route
between Phillips Street in Jersey City and Weehawken that
CNJ used to interchange traffic with the EL and NYC at
Weehawken. In so doing, CNJ crews operating on the River
Line ran parallel with the EL Weehawken Branch through
Jersey City and Hoboken.

At Willow Avenue in Hoboken, the EL Weehawken Branch
and the PC River Line connected at a series of crossovers
which gave EL access to Dykes Lumber and other customers
located in the so-called "Chicken Yard" on the other side of
the River Line. These crossovers also enabled CNJ crews to
interchange traffic with the EL on the Weehaken Branch.
Further up the River Line, where EL ownership ended, there
was another crossover that CNJ crews used to access PC
at their Kings Bluff Yard in Weehawken. EL owned some
track at Kings Bluff Yard and had rights over other tracks
at that facility.

These interchange arrangements consumed a fair amount
of River Line capacity and interfered with movement of
PC River Line traffic. Although EL operations were not
impacted directly, interchange traffic handled by CNJ
crews was delayed as a result, leading to the subsequent
rerouting of CNJ - EL traffic via Lake Junction.
