Larger caliber rounds, such as .308 or 7.62 military full metal
jacket, will do up to 1/2" mild steel just fine.
Military FMJ 5.56mm rounds will go through 1/4" mild steel just fine as well.
Locomotive fuel tanks are not armor plate.
