RE: (erielack) Train #1, The Phoebe Snow at Conklin, NY
I had heard that right up until the last run of 5 and 6 that Gregory Maxwell always wanted a report on the timeliness of these trains running them as full-service operations right to the end. I don't think these trains were ever late because of being dumped into a siding for hours. Other factors, wrecks, encounters with autos, and weather were primary reasons for the train running late.

I like this photo because it shows an REA flat with the 4 unit haul
containers behind the diesel set. Didn't know these cars were ever used
on #1. Most photos show them on 7 and 8 (3 and 4). Thanks Walt!

The roadcrossing is the 2nd past the east end of the former DL&W's Conklin, N. Y. yard. The engineer will be looking at the home signal for the east end of the yard in a few seconds, but it's very unlikely that the operator at BY tower will give him any less than a high green (clear). It would be unthinkable even at this late date to stick #1. A far cry from the way once famous trains are treated by the freight railroads nowadays.
