Use a Microtronics red bulb (14v, 30-50ma) ..
Wire it as the rear headlite. (simple method) Alternatively you can play  
with the CVs and set it to one of them and just turn it on independently.  
Another method (which I used)  is to use an MV Products red lens. The  backing on 
these is silver and you have to drill a very small hole in the rear  of the 
lens---or your light won't show through--but, either way you need a  lens.
I also put in a STXX GE decoder. I have used this engine and several  coaches 
for push-pull service for 9-10 years now.Converted one of the coaches to  a 
cab car, with battery powered red and clear lights controlled by a small  
switch under the car.AA battery, will last a long time if you remember to turn  off 
the lights. I remember coming downstairs one am on the way to the station  
and seeing these two small red lights looking at me from the Jersey City  
passenger terminal.
