I believe the decision to reduction track numbers on the Boonton line was a direct result of the decision to CTC the entire line from Secaucus to Denville Jct.  My grnaddad was the first trick Boonton disptacher when the line was CTCed and I rember him talking about the cost savings with the reduction of tower and operator jobs.  Not sure traffic drops were the reason.  After the line conversion, IIRC, the only operators were at Denville Tower and Lynnhurst Draw.

I, also remember the three track line through Athenia where we would sit at night waiting for HB-1(?) to roll west around 9PM
