The posts on the terminal / restaurants etc are very interesting. Brings
back some memories.

I ate in the restaurant with my grandfather, who was the head tax man for
the Lackawanna, a couple of times in the late '40's and early '50's. Saturdays
(people worked a half day on Sat then). Once at the counter--very exciting,
once in the restaurant, where he usually ate. Also went with him once over to
the car dumper--on that rope operated "ferry" across the canal. Once more
about 1960 when I went into the city with him-I was Lt by this time; he was long
retired (54) but still doing consulting work for the BEDT.
Also visited the big NYSME layout a few times. What I remember early was the
operators with their funnel speakers and earphones, all wearing ties and a
couple with suit coats. Other thing was a beautiful 8-10 car Pullman train with
80' cars (my Lionel cars were 7" or so--28') pulled by an 0-6-0! Actually it
was a Hudson minus its lead and trailing trucks. I think they had a lot of
problems with these things then.
