We're getting OT here so I'll be brief. LC&N did build the L&S as a portage RR from the end of canal at White Haven over Penobscot Mtn (Ashley Planes) to the Pennsylvania Canal at Wilkes-Barre. After floods damaged the Lehigh Canal north of Mauch Chunk (later, Jim Thorpe) the L&S was extended to MC and ultimately, Easton PA. Around 1868, CNJ acquired control of the L&S, which is what prompted LV to build across NJ and the DL&W to acquire the M&E. I believe RDG control of CNJ occurred much later. Paul B I think the lines in Pennsylvania were originally built by Lehigh Coal & Navigation and somehow the Reading gained control of them. The Reading also controlled CNJ at one time and CNJ assumed the Pennsylvania operations. This is all very cloudy in my memory right now but it was still an issue that had to be resolved when CNJ pulled out of their Pennsylvanial operations in the early 70s.
