It may have been that the DL&W fell into the same thinking that so many business - past and present - fall into in their belief that their "cash cow" business will always be there - in this case, anthracite for the DL&W, so they invested heavily in improvements of the physical assets that supported their core business, perhaps in lieu of looking ahead (or, side-to-side.)  And, when the lift from WW2 went away and reality set in after mines started to play out and alternative fuels were coming into use, the backward slide had not only begun but was probably irreversible.  Funny how business is alot like hockey - you've got to skate to where you think the puck will be if you want to have even a chance of winning the game, or at least staying in it.  And, hopefully you "guess" correctly!
