(erielack) February Syracuse Branch History



Was looking through some notes and thought I'd share some stuff.  Most are
from newspaper accounts of the day.

 

1, 1872             First train arrives on LV predecessor Ithaca & Cortland

14, 1929            Broken axle derails train in Jamesville, subsequent
fire, line closed for a day.

19, 1932            Locomotive and car derails at Borden's plant near Grant
Street in Cortland, northbound mainline closed the remainder of the day.

7, 1936             Passenger station canopy narrowed.

4, 1938             Beautiful red and green pacific #1123 makes an
appearance on the line, even gets a mention on the paper.

16, 1938            S&U Division wins safety award for the third year in a
row.

4, 1942             Snowplough hits a log near Kellogg Road crossing south
of Cortland, no damage.

6, 1946             Pullman service restored following its discontinuance on
July 10, 1945 for the war effort (bring those boys home!)

16, 1948            Engine derails on the Cincy branch in McGraw, big crowd
gathers the next day to watch the re-railment process

Week of the 6th, 1951     E8A #810 is the first diesel to be used on
passenger trains.

1. 1977             Magnolia Street roundhouse burns (rumors abound- Conrail
arson squad?)

3, 1987             NYS&W C430 3002 derails due to ice on crossing at Lisle,
unit is wrecked beyond repair.
