Re: (erielack) Akron Questions
I was living in Marlyland at the time of this derailment, and from what I understand the derailment was
at the brick plant siding. It seems to me the switch into the Harbison-Walker plant was off of #1 track
the westbound track. 2/NY100 must have been runninig eastbound on the westbound track. Does anyone know if this is correct and why it was coming east on the wrong main.
I have photo of 3657 on my E-L web page in Binghamton after it had been re-built and in 2005 as MRL 332.

This is the location of the tragic wreck involving 2/NY-100 on Thanksgiving Day,
1973. Apparently vandals had lined the mainline switch for the siding. Do you
recall if it was the brick plant siding or was there another siding in town?
This was the wreck that resulted in SDP45's 3657 and 3667 being rebuilt with the
long hood to Dash-2 specs.

That local from Leavittsburg to Kent also worked the Harbison-Walker brick
plant at Windham, Ohio. I
use to see it daily from the Windham High school. The tracks ran behind the
school, I tried to get as many classes as I could with a view of the tracks. The
power was always a baldwin S12 or 650 series Lima switcher.

- - what locals were based out of Akron? Or did they originate in Kent? How
far to the west did the local work?
No locals from Kent.
Kent was served by the Kent Local that operated from Leavittsburg M-F
mornings. That crew worked the W&LE interchange as well as Kent industries and
pulled the NYC at Braceville.
