There are a couple of other books out there that provide some excellent  
background on the American railroad situation, with emphasis on the Northeast. 
All are by Richard Saunders, Jr:   Merging Lines, American  Railroads 
1900-1970; this is an update of his earlier RR Mergers and the Coming  of Conrail, 25 
years or so ago. The other is Main Lines, 1970-2002, which is a  
sequel.Enjoyable reading, especially when you see names mentioned of people that  you had 
the opportunity(!) to work with over the years.
