Finally, rail museum will open: Railroad memorabilia, toy soldiers will
be available for viewing April 5 By ROB MONTANA - STAFF WRITER

The long-awaited Hornell Erie Depot will officially open its doors to the
public April 5.
HORNELL - After two-plus years of preparation, the Hornell Erie Depot museum
is set to open April 5.
Now the city is looking for people to man the museum, said City Planner
Heather Kaszynski.
“If we don't have volunteers we're not going to be able to be open,” she
said. “We're not just going to leave it open for people to wander through.
“We need some people to at least supervise,” Kaszynski added. “If anyone
wants to volunteer, we'd love to have them.”
The museum is expected to be open from 6-8 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays,
and from 12:30-3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
Part of the museum is devoted to railroad memorabilia, with glass cases
built by city public works employees showcasing various railroad, and some
Hornell, memorabilia. Items range from dining car menus; Erie Railroad playing
cards, matches and ashtrays; a Pullman towel and blanket; a Erie conductor's hat
and coat; rules manuals; and an Erie Lackawanna farewell map signed and
dated March 31, 1976. One of the highlights of the collection is a wooden coal
train, hand carved by Earl Kimball around 1896.
Kaszynski said donations of items are still welcome.
The other part houses David Shults' toy soldier collection, which required
construction of secure cases.
“There were a few things that had to be labeled, pictures to be hung and
lighting needed to be adjusted,” she said of the railroad museum. “The floors
need to be buffed from where we dragged display cases.”
People interested in volunteering their time or donating items to the museum
may contact Kaszynski at City Hall at (607) 324-7421.
