Everyone, Good news for New York State and Avon, NY in particular! Barilla America announced yesterday that they will be building a $96 million dollar pasta manufacturing and warehouse facility in Avon, NY. Construction starts in June. The pasta plant will be approximately 100,000 square feet and the warehouse and distribution facility (in partnership with Jacobson Warehouse) will be 200,000 square feet. It is estimated that 120 jobs will be created. Avon was chosen over Altoona, PA. Operations are expected to begin in 2007 and full production will start in 2009. Barilla is headquartered in Italy and is the largest pasta manufacturer in the world. The Avon facility will be located along the Livonia, Avon & Lakeville Railroad (ex-Erie Rochester Branch) and I am told that rail service was an important part of the deal, in addition to proximity to I-390 and the New York State Thruway. The site is a newly-designated Empire Zone (tax breaks). The facility will be located west of the LA&L mainline and north of the abandoned Erie line that went west to Batavia (the west leg of the old wye in Avon. I speculate that this abandoned segment of railroad will be reconstructed to provide sidings into the plant. This news made the front page of today's Rochester Democrat & Chronicle. Bill Burt - I'm dying to know any details on this and how it pertains to the LA&L. How much business is the railroad expected to pick up? How will LA&L access the plant? Can you share?
