All six wheel trucks on passeger equipment were used because of the axle
laoding of the loaded car. Note that many fairly recently constructed baggage cars
were 4 whl trucks on 60' cars. The 6 whl trucks were almost always on 70' or
longer cars.
Also, all steamine equipment that I know of was contructed with 4 whl trucks,
with the exception of the ATSF / AMTK bi levels and some Milw cars.
There was an excellent article on the riding qualities of trucks and
passenger car design in genreal in an issue of R&LHS Journal back about 25 years ago.
There were the resluts of riding quailities of passenger truacks and the
smoothest riding was the ancient ones used on the 1914 vintage PRR P-70 coaches!
This subject is quite well documented but you have to searcha bit in the
technical literature.
