So -- how many of you have written to the editor to correct -- not the reporter -- but the "historians:?

Tim,

You're right.  Reporters usually take what a "historian" says as gospel, rather than verifying it with another souce (if one exists), which is both time-consuming and probably thought to be unnecessary (by the reporter's editor).  I'm sure that papers like the New York Times will double- and triple-check the facts, but the smaller papers, like the Herald, will crank out the stories and God only knows to what extent they got it right (or wrong).  The problem is that the general public probably doesn't know the difference.
