(erielack) Erie fruit traffic Jersey City



From a booklet printed in Sept. 1948, about the Erie RR's New York Division. 
I'm not sure how it will look in email format, especially the data.
 page 17- Monmouth St. yard: (just north of main line at start of Weehawken 
branch)
21 tracks,  capacity per track 4 to 23 cars.
 total capacity: blocked 250 cars,  working 197 cars
"Carload freight is delivered from this yard.  In addition, 17 tracks in 
this yard are used for storage of passenger commuter coaches during the day 
all year except period when juice grapes are handled (Sept. to Nov., 
inclusive) During grape season cars of juice grapes are spotted in this yard 
and samples are displayed on covered platforms or in cars for inspection by 
prospective buyers. Narrow covered platforms are locatedbetween some of the 
tracks and are used for the display of boxes of juice grapes.  Auction sales 
are conducted in auction rooms located adjacent to this yard.  The following 
is the number of cars of juice grapes handled at Jersey City, seasons 1935 
to 1947 inclusive:"

page 8- Pavonia Ave. yard- New yard adjacent to Provost St.
6 tracks, capacity 5 to 8 cars each, total 44 cars, blocked,  40 cars 
working
"This yard is used during the grape season for the delivery of juice grapes. 
During thebalance of the year this yard is used for the handling  and 
delivery of cars of vegetables and other miscellaneous freight."

page 28, Croxton yard.  capacity 5600 cars.
"California fruit for Duane St. Station on arrival at Croxton is classified 
into F- Yard (Eastbound holding yard) where it is held until ordered by 
consignees.  Orders for this fruit are received in the afternoon and cars 
are then switched out and grouped together in accordance with order after 
which they are moved to Jersey City and floated to Duane St. for the market 
for which ordered."
