RE: (erielack) Boonton Line freight trains-analysis

Rich,

The Gladstone Branch, reverse-signalled on single track, wasn't TCS, was
it?

Chuck,

Roseville Ave was open 1st trick 5am to 1pm and 2nd trick 1 pm to 9pm.
This was well before and after the last trains arrived and departed on the
Montclair Branch.

Standard practice was before the operator at Roseville Tower headed home
for the night, to make sure the signals were lined track 3 to track 3
westbound, track 2 to track 2 eastbound and track 1 to track 1 eastbound
(that means lined through Roseville Ave). Traffic on track 1 had to be
changed between Millburn (controlled by Summit) and Roseville Ave. Track 1
was Traffic Control System (TCS). In other words it was CTC on track.
Only EL and ATSF used the term TCS most other railroads used the term CTC.

Roseville Ave was closed Saturday, Sunday and Holidays.

 Rich,

Regarding Roseville Avenue Tower, in later years (after 1966) did it close
basically after the last train had left the Montclair Branch? It seems to
me that things wrapped up pretty early on the branch and that all
 westbound
Morristown Line trains west of Roseville Avenue used Track 3 after 7-ish
 or
8-ish or so in the evening and that Track 1 was reset for eastbound
movements (i.e. for the AM rush) within that timeframe.

Also, in regards to the other (earlier) towers on the Morristown Line,
 when
might they have closed? South Orange, I believe, closed in 1966, but I
don't recall when Millburn and Morristown towers closed, do you?

 Chuck,

 1. The west end of the siding was controlled by Stroudsburg and the East
end was controlled by Port Morris
 2. The towers open at the time of the Conrail take over were:
former DL&W - Stroudsburg, Port Morris, Dover, Denville, Summit, Roseville
Ave., Newark, West End, Grove Street (Hoboken), Hoboken Terminal Tower.
The drawbridge at Lyndhurst was an interlocking controlled by the bridge
operator (not a towerman) as was the Lower Hackensack drawbridge at West
 End.

former Erie - Suffern (SF), Waldwick (WC), Ridgewood (WJ) HX and DB
 drawbridges.

 Rich,

Was the East Slateford siding controlled from the East Stroudsburg Tower
 or
Port Morris (UN?) Tower? Also, speaking of towers, what former DL&W towers
were still in operation in NJ at the time of the Con! rail takeover?

 Listers,

There was, at one time, a siding at Slateford. That was torn up way back
in the 60's some time. As a holdover from that siding there was a home
signal at East Slateford (where the siding ending) that was still there
until the end. Ev! erytime there was a lightening storm around the Water
GAp, the relay house there at East Slateford was stuck and screwed up
 everything for hours.

I thought the only passing siding on the cut-off was at Greendell. Perhaps
you're thinking about the "Old Road" coming off at Slateford, which forked
into two tracks just past the Junction?
