Extrapolating from the 1957 Railway Equipment Register's AAR car type designations which changed a little into the later dates:

"R" = refrigerator: an insulated house car.
"RB" = without means of refrigeration.
"RP" = mechanically refrigerated; power generated inside the car.
"L" = equipped with loading or restraining devices.
All cars with or without ventilating devices.
For information and comparison, "RS" was an ice bunker reefer.
"XI" was an insulated boxcar without ventilation.

Thanks, Paul. I forgot to mention that MDC also did the blue car a couple of years ago (mine is still snug in it's box). BTW, what's "RBL" (vs "RPL" for the mech reefers)?
