The Erie Lackawanna Dining Car Preservation Society will hold its first convention Oct. 21-23 at Hilton Scranton and Conference Center. Advertisement The nonprofit society, established in 2001, is dedicated to the preservation of the dining car experience on the Erie Lackawanna and its predecessors through the purchase and restoration of dining equipment. The organization’s secretary, Timothy Stuy of Parsippany, N.J., said Scranton was the logical choice to host the gathering since the society’s first restored dining car, EL 741, will be based and operated out of the city. Although about half of its 170 members live within 100 miles of Scranton, Mr. Stuy said, the group also wanted to raise its profile in Northeastern Pennsylvania. “Our thoughts were we really wanted to do something in the area to introduce ourselves,” he said. The group has invited members from several other historical societies to participate in the convention, including the Nickel Plate Road Historical & Technical Society, Erie Lackawanna Historical & Technical Society, Erie Lackawanna Historical Society and New Jersey Midland Railroad Historical Society. In addition, the convention will feature a reunion of veterans of the Erie, the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western, and the Erie Lackawanna railroads, Mr. Stuy said.
