One of the main reasons to avoid the New Connection was that many freight cars were too
large to fit through Kingsland Tunnel. In addition, changes to traffic flows and volumes after
Ford Mahwah closed meant that Hillburn Yard could be used to drop off cars for Paterson by trains
that operated via the Bergen County Line. This eliminated the need to operate through freight
trains via Paterson and the New Connection to access Croxton and vice-versa.
