(erielack) Logos: oh, that's where I read it . . . .

Al Staufer's Erie Power, page 170: "Regarding the Erie insignia there is a
story that explains the diamond and circle . . . The originator of the
emblem was one William J. Davies, an Erie agent employed at West Orange, NJ
from 1880 to 1890 . . . . Mr. Davies had a decided talent for sketching and
planned on drawing a suitable trademark for the Erie. Consequently sometime
in the late 'eighties', he devised the ball in the diamond. In his view the
ball symbolized the sun, and the diamond, or square, the four corners of the
earth. Considering the vast freight traffic that came and went over the
Erie on a national and international basis to all four corners of the earth,
it was indeed a fitting symbol . . . "

Ponder that next time you're near the Edison lab (in West Orange, close to
the former Orange Branch).
