This meeting during EastRAIL week presents a unique opportunity for Tri-State
entertainment. We're getting a show from the best the West, Ted Benson, who's
growing more fond of the Lackawanna and Susquehanna with each trip East.
The following is the text of our announcement cards, and Ted's own
description of the show. Other EastRAIL presenters will also be a the
meeting, Greg McDonnell has confirmed, for example, and all visitors are
welcome. Meetings begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Honeywell Corporate Headquarters
auditorium on Morris Ave about three miles east of Morristown and I-287, and
a half-mile west of County 510 (Morris Ave.) exit from Route 24.

The April 10th meeting will feature the Best of the Best. Veteran
photographer and author Ted Benson of Modesto California will present his
"Sierra Centennial," a tribute to the storied Sierra Railroad short line in
California gold rush country. This railroad was the site of many movies and
t.v. shows, including Little House on the Priarie and Petticoat Junction, and
is as classic and quaint in the West as the Ma & Pa was in the East. Today
the road is best known for its pair of Baldwin switchers and log trains.

This is EastRAIL week and some of the nationally known presenters will be
attending our Tri-State meeting. Ted is arriving Thursday afternoon, and in
the event of a flight delay R&R editor Steve Barry will bring his "Steam!"
show about recent photo freights. All are welcome for this great opportunity
to meet some of railroading's best-known authors and photographers. Meeting
starts at 7:30 p.m.

>>> If you'd like, I'd be happy to bring along the Sierra RR
Centennial B&W talkie from the 1997 symposium at Jamestown. It's the Three
Guys from Modesto presentation with a slug of classics from Al Rose and the
original "guy"--Guy Dunscomb, along with some of my own stuff. There's some
repetition in the first narrative section of "Sierra Railroad--untitled",
but not much, and this is a very nice companion piece to the Eastrail show.

As if the Rose and Dunscomb stuff in the Sierra Centennial show weren't
enough, there's also a special segment from October 1957, courtesy of the
California State Railroad Museum and their archive of photographs from one
Philip Ross Hastings. Yep! The 1997 Symposium was sponsored by CSRM and
having just acquired Phil's collection, Walt Gray and Cathy Taylor
graciously provided access to his photos from the excursion trip with DPM
that appeared as a cover story in the March 1958 issue of TRAINS. All the TR
shots are there, along with a number of images that didn't see print. <<<
