"Comet" cars are the standard NJ Transit/Metro-North commuter coach. The first cars didn't even have that name, but were ordered by NJDOT for service on the EL in 1968 (arriving in 1970). When NJT came along and took over the remaining EL commuter assets, they ordered additional commuter cars. They then provided the name "Comet II" to the new cars, and the moniker "Comet I" applied to the ex-EL cars. (someone there must have been a CNJ fan! ;)
