(erielack) Glen Rock turntable pit

Al H. and listers........here's a "believe it or not" item regarding your
question about the turntable pit on the 'Main Line" in Glen Rock.

The area today is known as "Lower Doremus Park" but about 100 years ago it
was the engine facility and yard of the Paterson & Ramapo RR., an ERIE
predecessor. When the ERIE received permission to build and operate outside
of N.Y. State the ERIE absorbed the P&R and another RR (The Paterson & Hudson
River) to reach Jersey City. It's ancient history, but true.

Old Glen Rock Police reports show they broke up fights between RR employees
at the yard during the early part of this century so the facility survived as
an ERIE property at least till then. There are many artifacts there
including building foundations, "the pit", rows of ties where the tracks
fanned out, etc.

It's a public area and nobody will bother you if you explore the site. Just
watch where you park!
