Re: (erielack) the fate of the EL



My understanding as well is that the trackage from the IN/IL State Line to
Griffith that the EL and C&O shared was to be eliminated.  This was because
at this the Chessie was sharing trackage with Amtrak, which Conrail did not
like.  So, if they eliminated this trackage C&O and Amtrak would have to
find alternate routes.  This was not a problem because of the available
former B&O through Indiana for Chessie.

But there were some prominent lumber yards in Indiana that did not survive
because of poor truck service at the time, and wished the rail was still
there.
