When I havepainted passanger equipment or engines I have first painted the 
item Scalecoat yellow, then used very thin tape from the drafting store 
(Chartpak Tape) to mask the lines.  You can get cratepaper tape that bends 
very easily also. 
the put on the gray, and make it off, and then the maroon.
