Dear Group,
Thanks for all your responses. This question arose as I was re-reading
Kalmbach's "Modeling the Clinchfield Railroad in N Scale." (Very
innovative layout, and valuable source of ideas for modeling in any
scale -- the layout layout pioneered the use of styrofoam for scenery,
which is now widespread in the hobby).
Anyway, apparently the CRR (now CSX) uses open-trough type flange
oilers, fed by a trackside reservoir. The wheels roll through the
trough and pick up some oil. Very low-tech, but effective. These were
included on the layout as details representative of the prototype
Clinchfield RR.
