The "road units" went everywhere. The GP35s, SD45's (and variants),
U33C/U36C's all traveled east-west in through service, primarily. The SD45s
and U-boats stayed in this role right up to Conrail.

In later years, the GP35s started being used more in local service. The
C424s lasted in road service until about 1970, then were assigned to local
jobs (Scranton was base for MANY of the C424s in later years). The C425s
were in road service later than the C424s, but stayed on the west end of the
system.

The EMD F-units went everywhere, but the Alco FA's tended to stay west of
Meadville.

Other common "local" assignments:

* Ex-DL&W GP7s (1270-series) were primarily up on the former DL&W branches
north out of Binghamton.
* Ex-Erie GP7s in the mid-1200s were primarily run out of New Jersey/Croxton
* I've noticed that lower-numbered GP7s (1200-1220 or so) seemed to work in
western NY an awful lot
* The majority of the EMD switchers worked east of Binghamton
* The majority of the Alco switchers worked west of Buffalo, with the
notable exception being Scranton with a small fleet of S2s
* GP9s (1260-1265) seemed to roam around, but mostly on the east end of the
system
* Trainmasters spent most of their EL lives around the Cleveland area.
* Freight RS3s (1000-series) were almost a West End exclusive.
* Baldwin switchers stayed in the Youngstown area primarily
