It is nowhere written that the current slothful operating practices
at NYP will continue forever. Some intelligence on capacity issues may
yet win out, leaving room for better NJ Commuter service.

But one could see plenmty of opportunities even with Amtrak's crummy
stewardship at Penn Station:

If Morris County is a strong destination for commission-hour trains,
than it would seem likely that the first train of the day might arrive
NYP after 9 am, when there is capacity even in the current scheme of
things, and a return shortly after 4 with Morris County pickups around
5.

One might expect a later departure -- after 7 pm -- again avoiding the
heaviest traffic times.

Another scenario: If NJT operated the service, one might expect other
slots to "open" -- simply because trains might serve a dual purpose --
Madison/Dover Express, and Dover-Stroudsburg and NY-Scranton Markets.

Metro North has considerable luck selling seats twice on the Upper
Harlem line -- many of those Massachusetts plates seen on cars parked
at Dover Plains (and soon to be Wassaic) represent passengers wqho
work in White Plains, who are replaced there by passengers wanting an
fast NY express.

There's no reason the same can't be true on a Scranton run.

Cheers,
Jim
