that base is very large but that was years ago and I thought I heard some=
of
the base land has been turned over to the county/state for park/wetlands
conservation use.
The main entrance to the base is about 1/4 mile south of NJ 18 exit 19 on=
to NJ
34, then on the left. The main rail yard is about 1 mile east, then 1/4 =
mile
north.
There was no bus or rail trip TO Earle. The cars left Morristown (M&E, w=
here
they usually are stored) early last week. Presumably the M&E took them t=
o the
Meadowlands Maintenance Center and then Conrail Shared Assets moved them =
to
the base, which has access from the 'Southern Secondary' on the east side=
=2E It
would probably have taken all day just to get there and back if we had ru=
n
from Hoboken.
We ran the 14 mile main line and the 2 miles on the pier. Without stops,=
it
took an hour at the majestic speed of 15mph while slowing for the base
security gates. There are 125 miles of track on the base, which is still=
quite active. In 1981, they toured some of the other 110 miles, but we d=
idn't
this time - probably the base has tighter restrictions now. Two ships we=
re on
the fingers of the pier, but we could not visit them (that would probably=
have
added a few hours to each trip). =
There is an area near the pier which was once the town landfill; it is no=
w
becoming wetlands since dumping stopped some years ago. I don't think th=
at
the base has 'surrendered' any land.
