I remember as an 11 yr old riding the Lake Cities in 1966 with my family to Chicago on our way to Texas. (The rest of the trip was on the Texas Chief.) I remember the nice dining cars and the spacious views from the table looking out the windows. I think the point the interested me the most was that we had to fill out what we wanted from the menu on a card and if memory serves me correctly, the menu stated we were not to give our order directly to the waiter but to write it down. Another fascinating point I recall was that when a meal was about to be served, a porter would walk thru the coaches and play a few notes on what appeared to be a small xylophone. Does anyone recall any of this? If you did can you relate the experience. From the passenger point of view the dining car was one of the highlights of a trip yet it is seldom talked about in railfan circles.
