Bill,

>Saw an undec Intermountain F-7A (Phase 1) shell at Caboose Hobbies today.
I only saw one in a box through a display case and what I saw looked quite
nice. MANY,
>MANY detail parts. Price was $49.95 for an undec shell.

I saw this today as well, but what tempered my decision to buy one was a
HIGHLINERS/ATHEARN F-unit shell sitting on the counter of my local shop!
Apparently, Athearn sent shells as "teasers" to selected shops to show their
customers.

Differences? Both shells were very nicely done (all the hoo-ha that
Intermountain has done regarding the lack of mold parting lines on the nose
isn't all that significant now, as the Highliner shell has almost no parting
lines at all). The Highliner shell is shot with a medium gray plastic that
tends to be a bit "glossier" (maybe it's just the mold?), and the Highliner
rivet detail seems to be ever-so-slightly crisper and well defined (but
let's see how well paint covers that up, eh?) The Highliner shell didn't
have all its details with it, and it has a little "trough" on the side to
fit the different types of variants of louvers (chicken wire, sheet metal
with EMD-style louvers, etc.) - this part bothered me, since it requires
that you fit in another piece, and this leads to the possibility of there
being a visible gap here. The Intermountain unit is only a Ph. I F7A right
now (those louvers being a key element of this), and they'll be shooting
different molds to do the phase variants, whereas the Highliner shell is
"one shell fits all."

The detail sprue for the IM shell is phenomenal. Parts, parts, parts! Before
everyone freaks out at the $50 price tag, think how much a comparable
Stewart shell would be, along with all those little baggies of Detail
Associates or Detail West parts you'll need to get it to the level of the
Intermountain shell. Not a bad deal when you think about it!

I personally will reserve purchase on either until the Highliner shell comes
out with the full complement of parts. (both are supposed to retail in the
same $50 price range)Then I'll make my decision. I will admit, though -
it'll be hard to pick, they're both just SO NICE! Don't think there will be
too many brass F-units forthcoming after these are released! :)

>Couple of questions for the list:
>Is the Intermountain F-7A Phase 1 the "phase" (realizing that phases were
meaningless to EMD) that the DL&W purchased in 1949 (nos.611A/B/C, 631A/C,
632->636A/B)?

>Does anyone know if Intermountain is planning on doing the DL&W frieght
livery? If no one knows or has contacted them, I will try to find out from
Intermountain.

I've spoken with them about the possibility of doing the EL and predecessor
roads, and they said "we'll be doing as many roads as we can." That means
"yes," but you might have to wait a little while...

>Has anyone seen the Athearn Genesis A units (aka Highliner) as compared to
the Intermountain shells.

See my comments above! :)
