 Hello Andy (and the group):

q.) I was wondering what type if any head-end express cars the Lackawanna
 used.

a.) Besides the customary baggage cars...there were a series of 40 foot boxes
fitted with racks. These were the '1000x' cars, with the final number in
place of the 'X'. A few of these cars later had steam generators put in them
to supply heating when passenger cars were used with freight diesels.

It was not unusual to see two express cars added to trains 5 or 8...they
would
be spotted on the express tracks at the Scranton station, and filled as the
day went on...the express car(s) from Buffalo or Hoboken (or Chicago via the
NKP) would be set out while the locos took on water and fuel, and they'd snag
the outbounds as they hooked up the rest of the train (one or two cars were
 frequently added at Scranton).

The cars with the generators in them were NKP. They were plain red cars with
no marking except a stencilled NKP,on each side. They had the same unit in them
as the F units, but with two 200 gallon water tanks. there was oil tanks under
the frame for fuel oil.
DL&W tried them and didn't like them since they would rather spend the extra
money getting locos with the steam units in them already than fitting out
baggage cars.
