Norfolk Southern Corporation, the New York State Department of
Transportation (NYSDOT) and the Southern Tier West Regional Planning and
Development Board (STW) today announced an agreement concerning service on
Conrail's Olean Secondary Track.
The agreement provides for the preservation of certain rail service and
maintenance standards on the line, commonly known as the "Southern Tier
Extension."
The 145-mile light-density line runs from Hornell through Olean, Jamestown
and Salamanca, all in New York, to Corry, Pa. Conrail now provides local
service between Olean and Jamestown.
The agreement achieves NYSDOT's objectives for the Southern Tier Extension
in connection with the joint pplication by Norfolk Southern and CSX Corp.
to operate Conrail's routes and assets.
Also as a result of the agreement, STW will support the Conrail
transaction and advise the Surface Transportation Board (STB) to that
effect.
