jrlap1 (SP) This is the James River to Los Angeles Paper running over the coast route due to problems with rail at Tehachapi. Shot Santa Clara yard, where the Mulford line joins the Peninsula Branch. perm2 (SP) This is the Permanente Local running up the Vasona block to the Kaiser Permanente plant. This branch line sees a sixty car block of Rio Grande originated coal perhaps two to three times a month. Light rail dictates small power--I have video of six GP9's doubling the hill. This particular shot was made just around the corner from the point where the Vasona block starts, off the Coast Route main at San Jose. up1 (UP) This is a Union Pacific stack train just off Altamont Pass, coming through Niles Canyon. Two C40-8's and two SD40-2's are typical power on the ex-Western Pacific these days. Shot at the old Fremont Station. sf (ATSF) This is a Santa Fe detour, westbound on the eastbound Southern Pacific main, just turning off onto the temporary track laid to connect the Santa Fe main west of Franklin Canyon. The flange noise was absolutely hair-raising... spfe (Southern Pacific Fruit Express) Shot during the first week of the re-opening of the SP Coast Route, just west of the San Jose SP Depot. The train is the WCWSM (West Colton to Warm Springs Manifest), heading off the Coast Main to the Milpitas line, to run up to the Springs. This location sees the full SP/Caltrain commuter fleet operation, in addition to two Amtrak trains and four Coast Route through trains per day. There are also several locals that pass, depending on the day of the week, including the Permanente local, the Hollister local, the "Rock Job" (aka the Santa Clara turn), the Salinas/Warm Springs turn, and perhaps a San Jose switcher. If Amtrak ends up with a shared facility in the San Jose area with the Commuter operation, then there will be an instant increase, with the California Zephyr and the San Joaquins running beyond their current terminus of Oakland into San Jose. sp7 (Southern Pacific) This is the OASJM (Oakland to Warm Springs Manifest, aka Warm Spring Turn) running into the Springs on a Memorial day. I had been listening to the scanner, and heard Magnolia Tower say "Sure looks pretty", causing me to Leap out of my chair and race across the bay, thinking there was a unit with a new paint job, since there were many rumours about this going around at the time (1989). Turns out it was the American flags in the lead unit... Still, a pretty sight. Steven (bjork@nisc.sri.com)
