St. Louis, our standing train, waiting on a siding for clearance, was hit head-on by another train that split a snow-packed switch. From: "Ted Lemen" hi_jeanx -AT- yahoo -DOT- com Date: Wed Feb 2 22:02:22 2011 Subject: A spare set up tires came along with the Southern 401 when it was loaded up in January 1966 in Margerum AL for movement to Decatur IL for unloading. Without a lift truck to pick them up, Guy Bald, superintendent of the Alabama Asphaltic Limestone Co. facility dragged them out of the shed they were stored in so they could be loaded on the flat with 401's tender. St. Louis on Southern's line across Southern Indiana in January,1968--while we waited in a siding for a clear track, another freight at low speed split an iced switch and hit the front loco on our consist, which included an F unit just ahead of our loaded locomotive. It was hours before the tracks were cleared of seven or eight cars that had toppled off the track when the jolt came.
