From: "Ted Lemen" hi_jeanx -AT- yahoo -DOT- com Date: Wed Feb 2 22:02:22 2011 Subject: A spare set up tires came along with the Southern 401 when it was loaded up in January 1966 in Margerum AL for movement to Decatur IL for unloading. Without a lift truck to pick them up, Guy Bald, superintendent of the Alabama Asphaltic Limestone Co. facility dragged them out of the shed they were stored in so they could be loaded on the flat with 401's tender. When I asked Dave how the engine ran when he opened the throttle for the first time, he said it was like a Swiss watch, meaning it glided along with track without a sound.
