Subject: This is the International Train Station Depot from Coutts/Sweetgrass. Originally built in 1890 by Sir Alexander Galt and his son Elliott Galt (partners in a consortium of investors from Canada, England and the United States). It straddled the Canada (Coutts, Alberta)– United States (Sweetgrass, Montana) border from 1890 to 1915. The International Border ran through the waiting / dining room. The Telegrapher and Station Agent worked in the centre section. It was one of only two "Lunch Stations" along the railway line which ran from Lethbridge, Alberta to Great Falls, Montana. Around 1915, the northern part of the station was moved across the border to Coutts, where it was used by the Canadian Pacific Railway until the closing in the late 1960's. In 2000 the station was bought by the Great Canadian Plains Railway Society and moved to an 35-acre site, 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) north of Stirling, AB, where it has been completely restored. Check the Galt Historic Railway Park website for hours of operation.

Subject: This bridge became rather famous, for as a wooden trestle it was one of the longest for its height in the country. The bridge and rail line between Lethbridge and Calgary were completed in 1911. The present steel structure replaced the wooden trestle in 1928. The more shallow wooden trestle on the south end (right side of photo) was filled in with earth dug by steam shovel and hauled by train loads and then dumped over the side. This shortened the bridge by about 500 feet.

Subject: This is a view, looking west, of the Lethbridge (Kipp) Marshalling Yard. An empty coal train is waiting to head west into the Crowsnest Pass for a refill at one of the coal mines in the Sparwood area of B.C. You can also see a pair of AC4400CW's, CEFX1054 & CP9664 on their way to the fuelling racks which are just visible as the "white towers" in the background. The red building is the yard office.

Subject: It is not normally recommended to take photographs, aiming directly into the sun. but sometimes it's well worth it. The silhouette of this AC4400CW is impressive. CP9829 is leading this three locomotive consist, two pulling, one pushing (see following photo), a unit coal train, heading west into the Rogers Pass. The lake is the Columbia Reach, on the southern end of Kinbasket Lake. The background mountains belong to the Dogtooth Range of the Purcell Mountains in the Rocky Mountains. August 19/05, along the Beavermouth section of the Mountain sub.
