Subject: The next set of pictures are from my March 2011x/c ski adventure down the B&S RR switchbacks 2&3. From being dropped off at Junction Rd and Rt44 to the base of the mountain, it took me just about 4 hours. I would have never been able to complete this ski trip if I had to start at the base and go up and then come back down. My friend Chris Bell met me at the base where I dropped off my car and then he drove me to the top and dropped me off. It was a one-way trip down hill.

I took many pictures of 2&3. I deleted many and didn’t post all of them to keep the list short. But even with all the cuts, the short list is 32 pictures posted.

This picture,1920, was supplied by Chris and this is Rt44 crossing over the B&S. It is currently buried under 50 feet of fill for the current roadway. This is where I parked last year 2010 to ski switchback 4. With 32 pictures to view, enjoy the ride.

Subject: My friend Chris made this out -of- scale layover of where the Cross Forks yard use to be. It was incredibly helpful in getting a good understanding of the area. Chris is very knowledgeable of this area as he lives and hikes here year round. He was quite helpful in putting this trip and others together.

Subject: My friend and I assumed that Junction Rd was too deep in snow to drive on so he dropped me off at Junction Rd and Rt44. It turned out that the road was packed down to pure ice. Going up hill was a small problem but once I got over the crest, it was all down hill. It was scary as hell x/c skiing on pure ice down hill and especially near the curves. I tried to keep my skies in the frozen snowmobile tracks just to maintain directional control. It was so bad, that I was prepared to fall over in case I really lost control. This photo was taken at Boone Hill Vista and the RR r-o-w is about 100 feet below me.

Subject: When I’ve been to this location during the summer I never realized that the Cross Forks yard was here, mostly due to overgrowth hiding everything. This area is where the B&S RR “main“ and Cross Forks line crossed each other. If you look at the pine tree on the right and trace the snow across the picture, you’ll see the Cross Forks line that goes up to and over the B&S main. This is what the concrete abutments are for. See the next 2 pictures. The small sign on the lower left of this picture is where the “main line” crossed over Junction Rd and then under the Cross Forks line heading towards switchbacks 2&3.

Subject: This is the beginning of the trail to switchbacks 2&3. The gate was installed many years ago and after the natural gas pipeline was laid. The gate was to prevent automobile traffic from driving over the gas line. The concrete abutments that carried the Cross Forks rail traffic over this line is just ahead and barely viewable in this photo.

Subject: I am standing on the clearing where the natural gas line is. You can clearly make out the r-o-w at the tree line. Switchback 3 is about 50 minutes away. SB 2 is far below and to the right not in view and about 2 hours away. If your on this trail and an avid x/c skier, you can do this trail much faster. But when you’re exploring a historical RR, you stop and “research” the area. It takes time.

This photo is the start of what is left of the ROW/Embankment facing West. Behind me, the embankment is gone and is now an access road for the quarry all the way to Tillman Rd.

The sign looks nearly new but I don't see any work being done to the actual structure. Nothing obvious anyways. If it does get the conversion, I'll be back.

By the way, I got out of the car and walked the wide area to make sure I knew where solid ground was. I didn't want to roll down the hill like some of the steam locomotives did. I also didn't see any signs for tresspassing or private property.

There are three sets of rails, all painted in white and can been seen clearly in this photo. I came upon this in August of 2007 and I haven't returned to see if it is still docked.

Coming home via Broadway I came across Greene St just to check it out and I accidently came across the boxcar. How appropriate that the street is named Greene and I found the PC car. Subject: This photo is where CSX crosses thru the intersection of Twin Cities Hwy, Erie St, Wheatfield St, Division St and Nash Rd in North Tonawanda. I caught it just before it crossed. It was slow moving all the way to the intersection and then stopped and waited for auto traffic to stop. Then it proceeded.

This photo has a lot to look at. Primarily Ganson St with ADM, General Mills and LaFarge. There were no ships docked here at the time I flew over them. At the bottom and just left of center you can see 3 silos remaining of the HO OATS elevators being torn down for the casino. You can clearly see the area where sand is delivered and transferred across from ADM.

This photo provides a better overall view of both yards. You can clearly see the ex-DL&W row coming out of the Bison Yard next to the reservoir and crossing over CSX at Frontier. You can see the former Palace Car Co roundhouse. The patch of grass next to it is where the West Shore roundhouse was located. This is according to the map on page 139 from the book, "A History of Railroads of Western New York."

csx-ns3: This photo further down the CSX mainline is the Central Terminal at the entrance/exit to the Belt Line. The large building opposite the terminal is the U.S. Post Office. The former CPRail Yard [SK Yard] is viewable at the top of the photo. There appears to be a Conrail unit parked near the SK Yard office but I couldn't verify it.

Looking down on the CSX Frontier Yard and NS Bison Yard. Although clouds obscure the yards a little you can see the West Shore row at Harlem Rd and Walden Ave. You also get a good view of the track layout of Frontier. You can also make out the ex-DLW row leaving the yard and the reservoir next to it.

Subject: Pennsylvania RR freight house on Ohio St. This is the south side of the building. It's also the RR loading side with a visible loading platform. The bumper and rails are still in place. The rails disappear into the weeds and therefore not sure how far they actually go. I walked the rails for several yards trying to find a time stamp on them. The rails are too far gone to be able to read them.

There are three loading bays. There are no rails on this side of the building. The Pennsylvania RR logo has been stripped from the front of the building. This building is also in very dangerous condition. The structure is falling apart and mostly from above.

I don't think this building could handle more than one boxcar. Maybe it could handle two boxcars with a first generation boxcar.

BIDCO is evident with several barges docked along the Buffalo River with ADM across the street. General Mills is to the right but out of the picture. Lafarge is to the extreme left and half of the structure is in the picture.

This is a close up photo while flying over head of the Horse Shoe Curve. The concrete abutments can be seen at the Ex-Erie/NS line at bottom center. You can see where the row goes through a "farm complex". This is also the approximate location of the former rr station.
