Subject: This is what remains of the Gardenville line wye to the West Shore RR with a siding into a warehouse on Sonwil Drive. The westbound wye was torn up several years ago. It is now fenced off with barbed wire. No trespassing I guess.

Subject: The next set of pictures are from my March 2011x/c ski adventure down the B&S RR switchbacks 2&3. From being dropped off at Junction Rd and Rt44 to the base of the mountain, it took me just about 4 hours. I would have never been able to complete this ski trip if I had to start at the base and go up and then come back down. My friend Chris Bell met me at the base where I dropped off my car and then he drove me to the top and dropped me off. It was a one-way trip down hill.

I took many pictures of 2&3. I deleted many and didn’t post all of them to keep the list short. But even with all the cuts, the short list is 32 pictures posted.

This picture,1920, was supplied by Chris and this is Rt44 crossing over the B&S. It is currently buried under 50 feet of fill for the current roadway. This is where I parked last year 2010 to ski switchback 4. With 32 pictures to view, enjoy the ride.

Subject: My friend Chris made this out -of- scale layover of where the Cross Forks yard use to be. It was incredibly helpful in getting a good understanding of the area. Chris is very knowledgeable of this area as he lives and hikes here year round. He was quite helpful in putting this trip and others together.

Subject: My friend and I assumed that Junction Rd was too deep in snow to drive on so he dropped me off at Junction Rd and Rt44. It turned out that the road was packed down to pure ice. Going up hill was a small problem but once I got over the crest, it was all down hill. It was scary as hell x/c skiing on pure ice down hill and especially near the curves. I tried to keep my skies in the frozen snowmobile tracks just to maintain directional control. It was so bad, that I was prepared to fall over in case I really lost control. This photo was taken at Boone Hill Vista and the RR r-o-w is about 100 feet below me.

Subject: When I’ve been to this location during the summer I never realized that the Cross Forks yard was here, mostly due to overgrowth hiding everything. This area is where the B&S RR “main“ and Cross Forks line crossed each other. If you look at the pine tree on the right and trace the snow across the picture, you’ll see the Cross Forks line that goes up to and over the B&S main. This is what the concrete abutments are for. See the next 2 pictures. The small sign on the lower left of this picture is where the “main line” crossed over Junction Rd and then under the Cross Forks line heading towards switchbacks 2&3.

Subject: This is the beginning of the trail to switchbacks 2&3. The gate was installed many years ago and after the natural gas pipeline was laid. The gate was to prevent automobile traffic from driving over the gas line. The concrete abutments that carried the Cross Forks rail traffic over this line is just ahead and barely viewable in this photo.

Subject: I am standing on the clearing where the natural gas line is. You can clearly make out the r-o-w at the tree line. Switchback 3 is about 50 minutes away. SB 2 is far below and to the right not in view and about 2 hours away. If your on this trail and an avid x/c skier, you can do this trail much faster. But when you’re exploring a historical RR, you stop and “research” the area. It takes time.
