The Genesee Valley Canal Tunnel was started in 1838, work on the Tunnel stoped in 1848 when a rock slide killed many men. The telltales, both sides of the underpass are still in place. This crossing was built in 1955 when the N.Y.C. moved there tracks to the south side of Batavia. Erie Railroad freight traffic discontinued in june 1959. Open as a state park in 1963. 1987 excursion trains stoped on Viaduct for the views,june 2002 excursions are barred from stoping on Viaduct.Aug. 2002 closwed to pedestrains on Viaduct. Feb. 2003 repair work started on Viaduct. On july 21, 2003 a tornado struck the Viaduct, about half of Viaduct came down.
