We gathered a sizable contingent from the Model RR Club and hit the Lakeshore -
The day was gray, but the signals were all high green for a great day of railfanning
CSX in Western NY.
Despite the heat it was an excellent day to explore! -
We had been to Vermilion a couple of times late at night to wander the area,
but had missed a lot of good spots in the dark. We decided to track down all the
accessible Control Points on the NYC main from Sandusky to Amherst through
Huron and Vermilion. Classic NYC territory and twelve trains in under 4 hours
made it a most enjoyable afternoon.
Two CSX Mains and Lots of Traffic -
A typical good time at the Deshler Hot-Spot! DERF Chicken and Camp Washington
Chili in large quantities produced a well-fed contingent of Railfans despite
poor weather forecasts. The weather held out and everyone had a great time!
CSX Columbus, Willard and Toledo Sub Action -
As usual Fostoria was a blast and later on Deshler was packed with railfans
and almost non-stop action! It was a great way to ring in the Fall season.
CSX Big Four and B&O Chicago Main Action (repaired link) -
I spent the night on the Big Four around New London and hit the B&O from RAMEY
to Attica Junction and PRR Attica Jct. to Bellevue, Ohio the next day.
I had never been to Willard Yard on the B&O so that was a treat for me as well.
CSX and NS wanderings from Oak Harbor to Deshler to Fostoria -
As we had to be out and about on Labor Day we decided to make a day of it and
finally get over to Deshler to visit the Historical Society's Crossroads Park.
While the holiday rail traffic was fairly light we had a great time and caught
some interesting photos. Deshler is a GREAT B&O Railfanning location!
Fostoria is one of my favorite railfan towns, anwhere. - It doesn't
matter what time of year or what day of the week, if you like trains this is a
fantastic place to park yourself for a day. It was recently announced that the
city fathers want to make a Railfan Park here, a great idea!
Something different for a change, Railfanning inside! - Just got some N
Scale Conrail SD80MACs and had to try them out. I don't have a layout set up
so I decided to create an easy to set up and easy to tear down floor layout
to get my Model RR fix :)
The ex-PO&D Sandusky Yard, Bellevue Action and 14N at Gyspum - It wasn't
supposed to be a railfan trip, but we happened to be nearby when RoadRailer
261 was getting ready to go south on the ex-PRR line to Bellevue. The rest
was a fait accomplis at that point...
CP 256, 248 to 247 and 242/Bay Jct. - The day was just too nice to pass up
and Spring Fever was biting hard so we "made the rounds" and shot some trains
on NS ex-NYC and ex-PRR lines in the area and caught SD9's on two different
trains!
The CP 266 area on NS's ex-NYC Chicago Main - This is where NS' ex-W&LE
line from Bellevue to Toledo crosses over and connects with the ex-NYC.
The day was looking nice and we had two cameras to shoot with so we decided to
head over to the depot in Oak Harbor for some late afternoon Mainline NS
Action. The Canon D30 digital provided us with some fantastic images despite
catching only two trains.
Shots at CP 251 and CP 242 to CP 240 on NS' ex-NYC Chicago main.
Shooting CP HUDSON to ALLIANCE was an urgent trip - as we had received word
that NS was continuing their Scorched Earth Policy on that line and all the
PRR PLS were soon to fall in favor of NS' "Star Wars" style mast and cab
signals.
While on a business trip we unexpectedly ended up in Bellevue, Ohio -
We found we had far too little time to take in all the railroad related
attractions in this area. I shot most of the equipment at the Mad River &
NKP Railroad Museum and we'll have to go back soon for a follow-up visit!
Digital shots from NS' ex-NYC Chicago Main and CSX' Walbridge Yard -
We had to pick up a powertrain module for the Blazer in Toledo so we decided
to railfan our way back to Port Clinton from the Maumee River at Toledo.
Digital shots from NS' ex-NYC Chicago Main -
Local FA10 had to back into the siding at CP253 while 14J installed a
runaround trainline hose on the 18th car on Track 2 so a couple of westbounds
could get by on Track 1.
Digital shots from NS' ex-WLE line in Kingsway near Fremont - We caught a
meet by pure dumb luck on the way to Fremont. The scanner went off and then
went off again and a detector went off so we headed for the tracks!
Digital shots from Fostoria, CSX' CD Line and NS in Oak Harbor -
Good action at Fostoria's ex-B&O Station, a chase on the ex-C&O Hocking
Valley Line and a couple of sunset shots of new NS Dash-9's at the Oak Harbor Station. A few bonus shots from Fremont too :)
Digital shots from the ex-NYC Main and ex-PRR Sandusky Yard -
Pacing from MP 246 to CP 244, Diamond work at CP 242, the south end of the old
PRR Sandusky Yard and Sandusky Bay Bridge between CP 247 and 248.
C-415 423, High-Nose C-420 2010, RS-18 5010 and an ex-LV boxcar still in
LV paint! -
Less than a month after the arrival of the long awaited ex-RI C-415, Will
visited the BSOR's engine facility at Riefler Concrete in Hamburg, NY.
CN 6060, PC, EL, LV, CP/TH&B and CR in and around the Western NY area. -
Mostly shot in 1976 and '77 in Buffalo, NY during the infancy of Conrail.
While rummaging around the ruins of my teenage darkroom I came across a few
envelopes of forgotten negatives from my teenage raifanning days. Many of
the negatives were quite damaged, but from a historical perspective there are
a lot of interesting photos of fallen flags and long gone trackage.
Shots of the ex-LV and NYC in Batavia and CR's Tier in Attica and Darien. -
We misplaced these scans and recently came across them. Included are what
is most likely the last photographs of Signal 397E on the ex-Erie Southern
Tier Line.
Photos from Welland, Hamilton and Newtonville on several occasions. -
We misplaced these scans and recently came across them. Extensive coverage
of the area around Bayview Junction and some shots from Welland and Newtonville.
Chase shots of the NY&LE Excursion and the Night Photo Session with the FPA's
- We misplaced these scans and just found them! Everyone had a fun time and
the owner of the NY&LE, Bob Dingman, even joined us for the night photos!
HOWELL Interlocking is an AWESOME Railfan Location! - While in Atlanta for a
couple of baseball games we had to do some railfanning and we definately hit
the jackpot.
Chase shots of the 90MACs from September 18, 1999 - Toward the end of a good
afternoon of railfanning we swung by Buffalo's SK Yard at the western end of
the ex-Erie Southern Tier line to see if there was any interesting power
around. Turned out there was!
Ray Roberts shot a lot of
trains around Buffalo in the 70s and 80s - He continues to send more in, be sure to check back periodically!

We went out for Conrail's Last Sunday in the Buffalo, NY area to shoot what we could. We spent most of the day at Lake Avenue near CP 5 on the Lake Shore Line in Blasdell shooting slides and video.
Wouldn't you know that our brand new 2 day old Canon EOS Elan IIe would go
belly up on us the morning of the Last Day, May 31! We did get some nice video
and will post captures of those in lieu of slides soon. Canon was not the
least bit helpful, we now recommend Minolta and Nikon! At least we got
everything on the 29th and 30th OK.
We went out for Conrail's Last Saturday in the Buffalo, NY area - These are
the slides from Frontier Yard, CP437/Stock Yard and Lake Ave. in Blasdell.
March was still cold, but what can you do? -
I spent an afternoon out with "BCPrez" fanning Frontier and SK Yards. Lousy light,
but trains are trains and we caught some Susie-Q SD45's at SK!
Spring was fast approaching and the Railfan Bug was biting hard! -
We got out of the office and shot some of the Buffalo area on Thursday the
25th and then headed to Hornell to pick up a magazine collection and fanned
the Tier all the way back to Buffalo on a beautiful afternoon.
Mike sent us some pictures from Washington and Oregon and promises to add some
more every month.
Scott Thompson shot a lot of film in 1998 in California and Oregon, here's the pix!
