Please note that the MUD is no longer running, this page has been left for the sake of posterity. The link at http://www.railfan.net/mud.html explains the minimum of what is currently necessary to log into the mud and how to navigate to the trains. When you first enter the MUD you need to create your character which is a brief process I will illustrate here with my answers for a test character names "Tester", note that passwords don't "echo" back you, but they are going through: >>>> What is your name? Tester Did I get that right, Tester (Y/N)? Y New character. Give me a password for Tester: Please retype password: What is your sex (M/F)? m Choose your race: # Race - ---------- 1 Human 2 Elf 3 Dwarf 4 Halfling 5 Gnome 6 Minotaur 7 Orc 8 Ogre 9 Kobold A Goblin B Pixie C Centaur D Lizardman E Merfolk Choice? 1 Choose your class: [C] Cleric [T] Thief [W] Warrior [M] Magic-user [I] Invoker [A] Martial Artist Class: w Enter Terminal Height: [10-60 / ENTER=24] Enter Terminal Width: [40-160 / ENTER=80] <<<< Just hit the enter key for the Terminal questions, the default works fine. You now get an information screen and can hit Enter again to get o the main menu. At: Welcome to MOON MUD! -------------------------- 0> Board the Shuttle back to Earth. 1> Dock to the MOON! 2> What is your appearance? 3> Read Some Lunar History! 4> Alter your Lunar Security Code! 5> Vaporize yourself... =~( Smack a number: Choose 1 and you are in the game. You start at the Lunar Temple and need to get to the trains so we go south to The Solar Fountain then down to Solar Fountain MSS Shuttle Station then east to the Luna/Temple - Buffalo/Ferry Shuttle then east to MSS Ferry Street Station then up to the Foot Of West Ferry Street then west to the Ferry Landing Station where you can wait for the train or walk the tracks to find one if you don't want to wait for one to appear. The "ex" (exits) command shows valid directions to go and short descriptions witjh the word Station in them are the train stations. If you are in a station and the train arrives you can now also go UP onto the train: > ex Obvious exits: North - Water Works Station South - Georgia Street Station > With a screech of brakes the commuter train from Water Works Station pulls into the depot, and the conductor steps down. 'Watch your step please.' he says with a smile. > ex Obvious exits: North - Water Works Station South - Georgia Street Station Up - NYC RR Commuter Train 411 To get off the train you go d (down) at a station stop. The first letter of a direction can be used as typing shortcuts, n, e, w, s, u, d. Most commands have shortcuts which is usually the first letter or first two letters of the command name. l is short for look which can also be typed, but l is shorter 'l' looks at the current 'room' you are in 'l train' looks at the train 'l cars' looks at the passanger cars 'l loco' looks at the engine On the trains: >>>> > The conductor hollers 'ALL ABOOOOARD!' as he swings back onto the train. You hear the locomotive whistle and train jerks into motion. The conductor announces 'Delaware Avenue Station Next! Delaware Avenue Next!' The commuter train slows to a halt. The conductor steps off the train down to the platform. > d Delaware Avenue/Delaware Park Station This was once the site of the elegant Pan American Exposition Station. It has since been reconfigured for use as a regular commuter station, but signs of its former glamour remain here and there. Delaware Park was once planned to stretch all the way to this location, but the Exposition grounds forced some changes to that plan and this area has since been utilized for the expanding commercial and housing space needed by the ever growing Queen City of The Great Lakes. Across the tracks just to the west is the end of the Pierce Arrow automobile factory complex that stretches virtually all the way to Elmwood Avenue. Colvin Station is to the east and Crosscut Jct. is west from here. Down the stairs is the intersection of Delaware and Linden. a student is here. An old commuter train is here loading and unloading passengers. The venerable old commuter loco pants impatiently, waiting for the conductor's highball signal. *Glowing* *Humming* > <<<< If for some reason or another some character attacks you all you need to do is flee :) >>>> You swing your fist at a troublemaker kid, but miss him! ( 2) a troublemaker kid massacres you to small fragments with his hit. > flee Delaware and Linden You are at the Corner of Delaware and Linden Streets. Pennys restaurant is to the east. Supposedly a really cool group of BBSers stops in there on Wednesdays for coffee and chat, might be worth a try! Qwerkins, which has been reported to have really lousy food and terrible service is to the west. Delaware Avenue stretches to the north and south. Officer Bustme is wandering around looking for donuts and coffee. You flee head over heels. > <<<< Usually the railroad areas are safe, but sometimes a malicious character like a railroad cop can wander by! A hint to get to other trains, Exchange Street Station is adjacent to FW Interlocking which connects to both the PRR at DM Tower and the Erie at Buffalo Erie Railroad Station. Both lines are walkable and ridable as well. Exchange Street Station is south from Ferry Landing Station for a bit and then east. The railroad areas were built on top of our existing fantasy Moon MUD and the entry portal starts you out at the "Lunar Temple", but not to worry, the Ferry Landing RR Station in Buffalo is but a few keystrokes away. I plan on making the RR MUD stand alone when I have time and expand on it some more. It's quite tedious work though, a lot of programming. - Henry
