Depot owner hopes to remake building
May 21

By Melinda Mawdsley

Lynn Greenwald had grand visions for the Grand Junction Depot when she
purchased the century-old building five years ago.

She still does.

On Wednesday, the small organization Friends of the Depot hosted an open
house to give the public a chance to see the historic Grand Junction
building. Greenwald was there, along with hundreds of others. The turnout
was more than Friends of the Depot member Paul Brown anticipated.

"We wanted to see the building and learn more about Grand Junction," said Ed
Knaysi, who attended Wednesday's open house with his wife Anita Knaysi.

The couple moved to Grand Junction two months ago. The couple previously
lived in South Carolina and Europe. In Europe and the southern part of the
United States, old buildings are restored and functional, they said.

They would like to see something similar happen to the depot. They may get
their way.

Although the 9,250-square-foot building is for sale for $1.1 million,
Greenwald loves the building and still maintains a vision for the depot.

She wants the depot, with its grandiose ceilings, open layout and large
windows, to be an events center. She could see a brew pub being built at one
end of the building.

If she doesn't sell the property, she might find an investor or contractor
to make her dreams happen.

"I love old buildings," Greenwald said. "You name it, it can be done here."

Greenwald is working with Friends of the Depot to help restore the property,
even if she eventually sells it. The depot was built in the early 1900s.

Before Wednesday's open house, there were about 12 people who were part of
the Friends of the Depot group. After Wednesday's open house, Brown
estimated there were hundreds.

All donations made to Friends of the Depot in care of Western Colorado
Interpretive Association go directly to the depot building.
